DEGREES of PROTECTION PROVIDED by ENCLOSURES (IP CODE)

The IEC 60529 standard (IP Test) classifies the degree of protection of enclosures produced to protect electrical equipment.

IEC 60529 standard covers enclosures that protect electrical equipment whose rated voltage does not exceed 72.5 kV.

IP Tests cover ;

Protection against the access of people to dangerous parts inside the enclosure,

Protection against the penetration of foreign solid objects into the equipment inside the enclosure,

Protection against water ingress, which can damage the hardware inside the enclosure.

Apart from these titles, the IEC 60529 standard is a standard shaped to prevent damage to “Persons or Live Animals” from the tensioned sections in “Direct Contact” other than protecting the product.

In accordance with the IEC 60529 standard, the protections provided by enclosures have a protection classification system called "IP Code".

1.Protection against access to hazardous parts and solid foreign objects

It classifies the degrees of protection (for example IP2X) against the entry of foreign bodies, including dust, in the TS EN 60529 IP test standard.

The priority checks of this protection classification (IP Code), which are numbered from 0 to 6, are detailed in the table below.

In addition to the controls in the table, the products are kept in the dust cabinets in the IP5X and IP6X classifications, in the dust booths where the powder circulation is provided, according to the volume of the sample. In the IP6X protection classification, this process is carried out by an internal volume vacuuming process with a device mounted inside the product.

2.Protection against water ingress

It classifies the degrees of protection provided by enclosures (for example IPX5) regarding the harmful effects on equipment due to water ingress in the TS EN 60529 IP test standard. The information regarding this protection classification (IP Code), numbered from 0 to 9, is detailed in the table below.

Except for the information in the table, the test values and intensities determined according to the IP test classification vary. Experiments are carried out in environments where suitable environmental conditions are provided with fresh water at a certain water temperature.
